Resonant Breathwork as Multimodal Vagal–Interoceptive Modulation: An Empirical Synthesis of Non-invasive VNS, Breathing-Driven Interoception and Respiratory Tools

Resonant Breathwork combines vocalization, breathing mechanics, and biofeedback to influence the vagus nerve and internal body awareness. A review of human studies from 2022 to 2025 shows that stimulating the vagus nerve through the ear can increase vagal activity, depending on the frequency and pulse width used. Humming or singing at a slow pace around 0.1 Hz enhances heart rate variability and positive mood. Emphasizing exhalation and slow breathing amplifies brain responses to heartbeats and attention to internal signals. Breathing tools that create oscillatory pressure improve airway clearance, and inspiratory muscle training increases breathing strength and shifts the nervous system toward relaxation.
