Electrophysiology and neurophenomenology of intermediate states of consciousness between wakefulness and sleep

Dokumentenrepositorium der RUB January 1, 2025 Campillo Ferrer, Teresa

During sleep and transitions between wakefulness and sleep, intermediate states of consciousness can occur that combine features of both waking and sleeping brain activity. Hybrid EEG patterns were observed during meditation, arousals, REM and NREM sleep, including the sleep-onset REM phase. Awareness at sleep onset may promote lucid sleep, and awareness of body sensations during sleep was linked to unusual body experiences. The dissertation presents a conceptual model for out-of-body experiences, sleep paralysis, and lucid dreaming, an induction protocol, phenomenological analysis, sleep staging, and EEG correlates. Further research is needed to improve induction and phenomenological techniques and clarify the neural correlates and significance of these states for consciousness and perception.
