Investigating Consciousness in Sleep Studies: Evaluation of Key Dream Lucidity Induction Techniques

International Clinical Neuroscience Journal May 11, 2023 Berenika Maciejewicz

Lucid dreaming is a rare state of consciousness during REM sleep; over half of people have experienced it at least once, and about a quarter report monthly episodes. Becoming aware within a dream often causes immediate waking, but experienced dreamers can maintain lucidity and control the dream. Scientists have developed various induction techniques, but many protocols rely on anecdotal reports, introducing bias and inconclusive data. A major challenge is the lack of methodological standardization. The authors propose classifying induction methods into three categories: external stimulation, cognitive techniques (mnemonic methods and reality checks), and miscellaneous approaches including pharmacological ones.
