Motives and Images of Medieval Mysticism in the Works of Nikolai Gumilyov

Litera August 1, 2023 Alena Yur'Evna Pisarenko

Mystical motifs and images from the Middle Ages significantly shape the work of Russian poet Nikolai Gumilev, enriching his creative world and forming his unique style. Through comparative analysis, textual interpretation, and cultural-historical contextualization, the article examines how mysticism influences structure, rhythm, language, and imagery in his poems. Contemporaries and critics, including Marina Tsvetaeva and Anna Akhmatova, received these mystical elements in specific ways. The study concludes that mysticism is a key factor in Gumilev's style, establishing him as a major early 20th-century Russian author. The novelty lies in a detailed analysis of mystical elements within his overall aesthetic principles, previously unaddressed.
