Mass trance among middle school students is better understood through social psychology than as a clinical disorder. Interviews with 17 informants and analysis of 31 video recordings revealed seven contributing factors: emotional stimulus, mystical experiences, suggestibility, supernatural interpretation, anomalous experience, unconditioned emotional response, and mimicry. The core finding indicates that mass trance in this context represents emotional contagion colored by supernatural beliefs.
