Analysis of Serotonin in Caenorhabditis Elegans Subjected to Micro-Dosing with Psilocybin| Iris Publishers

Insights in Chemistry and Biochemistry October 15, 2025 Douglas B. Craig

A method was developed to measure serotonin in the roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans. The process involved extracting serotonin from basic solution into n-heptanol, back-extracting into acetic acid, then labeling with a fluorescent dye and cyanide. Capillary electrophoresis with laser-induced fluorescence detected serotonin at 1 μM. Worms were grown with or without psilocybin. Psilocybin reduced serotonin concentration from 0.9 to 0.5 mg/mg protein.
