Yoga an integrated mind body intervention for improvement in quality of life in individuals with Alzheimer's disease and their caregivers.

A 12-week yoga program (postures, breathing exercises, and meditation) for 30 older adults with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease improved their quality of life. Depression scores on the Geriatric Depression Scale fell from about 8.4 to 5.1, and cognitive scores on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment rose from about 18.2 to 21.1, with gains in language, attention, and delayed recall. Caregiver burden also decreased. The results suggest that a structured mind-body intervention can benefit both patients and their caregivers.

Meditation Enhances Small-World Network Efficiency: MEG-Based Evidence from Attention and Control Systems.

Meditation alters brain network organization in a frequency- and experience-dependent way. Using magnetoencephalography, researchers measured small-world propensity (SWP), a marker of neural efficiency, in three functional networks—default mode, fronto-parietal, and attention—among advanced meditators, beginner meditators, and a control group with no formal training. Advanced meditators showed higher SWP in the attention network at 19 Hz (beta frequency) compared to controls, while beginners showed higher SWP in the fronto-parietal network at 8 Hz (theta frequency). These results suggest that Surat-Shabda-Yoga meditation engages brain networks in a stage-specific manner, supporting efficient information processing.
