Effects of a modified mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for family caregivers of people with dementia: A pilot randomized controlled trial.

International Journal of Nursing Studies October 1, 2019 P. Kor, J. Y. Liu, W. Chien

A randomized controlled trial tested a 7-session modified mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for family caregivers of people with dementia. The intervention was feasible, with 83% completing at least five sessions and an 11.1% attrition rate. Compared to controls receiving usual care and brief education, the intervention group showed significantly reduced stress and depressive symptoms immediately after the intervention, and reduced stress, depressive symptoms, and burden, plus improved physical quality of life, at the 3-month follow-up. A focus group identified themes including impacts on caregivers and people with dementia, and difficulties in practicing mindfulness. The authors suggest larger studies are needed.
