An Ancient Disease in a Modern World

The article reviews current research on the relationship between dreams and epilepsy, covering the protective role of REM sleep on seizures, the content of epileptic dreams, and the impact of epilepsy on sleep and dreaming. It notes that while modern neurological research has improved treatment, stigma and misconceptions continue to affect care and quality of life globally. The authors argue for a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural approach to epilepsy care, considering both biomedical and experiential dimensions, including spiritual experiences. Implications for therapy and future research directions are discussed.
