Interpreting Dreams of Displacement and Belonging
December 17, 2025 Leide Porcu
Dreams provide a window into the emotional and psychological lives of immigrants, reflecting anxiety, nostalgia, grief, and transformation. The chapter introduces common dream themes among immigrants, such as feeling torn between two places, mourning loved ones from afar, and negotiating personal agency in unfamiliar cultural contexts. Case studies illustrate how dreams shift over time, mirroring personal growth, emotional healing, and evolving identity. A therapist interlude offers guidance on culturally sensitive dream work, including imagery rehearsal therapy. A group exercise called the "Dream Circle" facilitates safe dream sharing. Dream reflection is presented as a democratic, accessible tool for self-discovery that honors personal symbolism and cultural meaning.
