The Transcendent Self

May 11, 2026 Cordele Glass

This chapter argues that creative engagement can lead to self-transcendence, unity, and flow states. Drawing on contemplative science, optimal experience research, and existential psychology, it proposes that focused, meaningful creative work dissolves self-boundaries and reveals deeper awareness. The authors contend that transcendent experiences arise naturally through creativity and can be cultivated without extremes or burnout. They offer tools for integrating such peak moments into daily life, grounding them in stable wellbeing. Rather than an escape, self-transcendence is presented as a fuller embodiment of creative presence.
