Chapter 15 describes gestalt dream work, conscious connecting breathwork, and psychedelic integration as therapeutic approaches that use non-ordinary states for healing. Dream work involves bringing a dream to life in the present moment, allowing a client to embody each element of the dream, which can reveal their entire existence. Conscious connecting breathwork guides a person from ordinary awareness of separation and suffering into non-ordinary states of expansion and transcendence. Psychedelic integration is the process of understanding what a psychedelic experience has revealed.
The chapter describes four levels of awareness relevant to therapeutic sessions: ordinary awareness (ego, personality, id, and acquired norms), subtle awareness (direct here-and-now experience of inner and outer dimensions), awake awareness (liberated, infinite energy experienced as loving presence of one's core), and True Self awareness (transpersonal oneness with everything). In gestalt therapy, the awareness continuum—a series of present-moment open questions—helps clients deepen their awareness.
