A reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography method was developed to quantify muscimol in five aqueous extracts of Amanita muscaria at different developmental stages. The highest concentration of muscimol (1,210 mg/ml) occurred in the young mushroom stage, and concentrations progressively decreased as the fungus aged. The method offers a simple means to quantify muscimol, a metabolite of pharmaceutical interest as a possible treatment for tardive dyskinesia and Parkinson's disease.
