4E Cognition for Symbiotic Architecture?
ISEA2023 PROCEEDINGS June 6, 2024 Yann Blanchi
Architecture should be reconceptualized as part of a continuum of artificial and natural agents, according to the authors. Drawing on 4E cognition (embodied, embedded, enactive, and extended), they propose the notion of 'symbiotic architecture' and test it with examples from contemporary buildings. The paper argues that architectural apparatuses function as actors within this continuum, blurring the boundary between the built and the living.
