This paper provides a general account of reductionism in contemporary analytical philosophy of mind, morality, action, and causation. It discusses six reductionist strategies—reduction based on synonymy of terms, the thesis of a posteriori identity, analytical functionalism, anomalous monism, analysis invoking supervenience, and conceptual analysis without synonymy—and argues that these strategies manifest differently across philosophical fields, making them prone to different criticisms and interpretations. The authors conclude that speaking of reductionism in general as a single phenomenon encompassing all fields, based on a unifying model or vision, is not viable.
