Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) reduced depression, anxiety, and premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms in women with mild to moderate PMS who also had depressive symptoms. In a randomized trial of 60 university students, those receiving eight weekly group MBCT sessions showed lower scores on the Beck Depression Inventory (15.73 vs. 25.36), Beck Anxiety Inventory (16.96 vs. 26.60), and Premenstrual Assessment Scale (42.86 vs. 58.93) compared to a no-intervention control group. The authors conclude that MBCT is acceptable and potentially beneficial, and that psychotherapy should be considered a treatment option for this population.
