Modernity has produced a spiritual crisis rooted in a loss of direct self-knowledge and an overactive ego. Islam, and specifically Sufism as its contemplative path, offers remedies for this crisis. This article, based on a literature study, argues that both practical and philosophical Sufism are relevant today: practical Sufism improves morality, while philosophical Sufism enriches intellectual life. Together they can counteract the negative effects of a lack of contemplation in economic, political, and social spheres, as well as in humanity's relationship with the natural environment.
