Feeling at one: Socio-affective distribution, vibe, and dance-music consciousness

The chapter argues that the consciousness experienced during clubbing and raving can be understood through the theory of extended mind, where mind is a distributed system involving brain, body, and environment. Building on the concept of music as affective atmosphere, it contends that the 'vibe' of a dance party is cognitively, socially, and affectively distributed. Participating in this vibe affords 'primary musical consciousness,' a pre-reflexive state of affective and bodily knowledge. The authors speculate about neural correlates of these experiences by drawing an analogy with brain research on psychedelic states.
