Mind as Machine: The Influence of Mechanism on the Conceptual Foundations of the Computer Metaphor

Rudn Journal of Philosophy January 10, 2023 Pavel N. Baryshnikov

This article traces the mechanistic origins of the computer metaphor that underpins cognitive science, artificial intelligence, and philosophy of mind. It argues that the long European tradition of mechanical computing devices created the prerequisites for machine functionalism. The idea of multiple implementation arises from formal symbol systems prescribing rules for rational abstractions through a computational engine's physical architecture. The article examines the conceptual shift and semantic foundations for transferring properties from automata theory to philosophy of mind. It analyzes criticisms and defenses of machine functionalism by altering the "Mind as machine" metaphor, and explains why the information-computer approach remains stable in cognitive sciences.
