Women's Experiences of a Close Brush With Death and Posttraumatic Growth.

Nursing for women's health February 1, 2023 Mary Ellen Doherty, Elizabeth Scannell-Desch

Women who have had a close brush with death report experiencing posttraumatic growth, according to a qualitative descriptive study. Twelve women aged 35 to 79 from the United States described their experiences in interviews. Five themes emerged: My Trauma Experience, My Will to Live, Support Was Important, Putting the Pieces of My Life Back Together, and Near-Death Experiences. Participants attributed their growth to factors such as a supportive network, belief in God as a source of strength, the will to live, and encouragement from health care professionals. The authors propose that nurses and other providers can educate women about the possibility of posttraumatic growth after adversity.
