From Mud to Lotus: Transforming Dukkha Into a Pedagogy of Love
July 7, 2026 Gaston Bacquet Quiroga
A personal narrative describes how Buddhist teachings, especially Thich Nhat Hanh's mindfulness and loving-kindness, helped a teacher transform personal suffering (dukkha) into healing and more compassionate pedagogy. The author recounts how emotional disengagement initially hindered connections with students facing financial strain, adaptation difficulties, and academic struggles. Through meditation, study of Dharma texts, and practices like walking meditation, loving-kindness meditation (Metta Bhavana), and Right Speech, he cultivated genuine presence. The narrative argues that recognizing shared human suffering enables empathetic teaching, and that contemplative practices can transform both teacher and classroom relationships.
