Tolerability and suitability of brief group mindfulness-oriented interventions in psychiatric inpatients: a pilot study.

International journal of psychiatry in clinical practice September 1, 2016 Katerina Nikolitch, Vincent Laliberté, Ching Yu et al.

A brief 10-minute group mindfulness-oriented therapy was well tolerated by 92.5% of acutely hospitalized psychiatric inpatients, and 50% met stringent suitability and tolerability criteria. Among the three interventions tested, tai chi was the most suitable (76.5%) compared to body scan (35.7%) and mindful eating (22.2%). Clinical and sociodemographic factors, including gender, hospitalization length, presence of psychosis, and pre-morbid functioning, were not associated with suitability or tolerability. The findings suggest that brief mindfulness interventions, especially those with an active component like tai chi, may be suitable for this population, including those with acute psychosis.
