Depression is a clinically and socially impactful disorder often resistant to conventional treatment, prompting exploration of complementary therapies. Psychedelics like psilocybin and MDMA have shown rapid and lasting reductions in depressive symptoms. This integrative review of 14 studies from 2015-2024 found that psilocybin significantly reduces symptoms of major depressive disorder, including treatment-resistant cases, with rapid and sustained improvement after one or few doses. MDMA combined with psychotherapy demonstrated robust efficacy for post-traumatic stress disorder, with potential in palliative contexts and long-term cost-effectiveness.
