Secular mindfulness, particularly the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program popularized by Jon Kabat-Zinn, may be more deeply influenced by Vedic contemplative traditions—Advaita Vedānta, Patañjali Yoga, and Haṭha Yoga—than is commonly recognized. While mindfulness is usually linked to Buddhist origins, this paper argues that key Vedic concepts such as intrinsic wholeness, perpetual availability, and non-duality align closely with Kabat-Zinn's approach. Analysis of primary Vedic texts and Kabat-Zinn's writings suggests that his secularization of mindfulness is an innovative adaptation that owes a significant debt to Vedic philosophy, offering a new perspective on the historical and philosophical roots of contemporary mindfulness practice.
