A Discussion of the Foundations of Philosophy of Mind

International Journal For Multidisciplinary Research June 25, 2025 Rajeev Tripathi

The article examines the mind-body relationship, dualism, interactionism, and the link between mind and machine via functionalism and computational functionalism. It argues that discussions in philosophy of mind inevitably lead to metaphysical questions about the nature of mind, which then raise epistemological questions about how we know the mind. The mind is considered a non-physical substance without extension or space, functioning as part of the central nervous system and computational processes. The author identifies unresolved fundamental questions in the field, such as what philosophy of mind is, what is not mind, and why it is philosophy of mind, highlighting gaps in research and methodological implications.
