Formulation of Definitions of Consciousness on the Methodological Basis of Realism

Problemos April 27, 2022 Adas Diržys

The paper argues that the question 'what is mind?' should be approached from a metareflective realist stance, where different definitions of consciousness are seen as always instantiated and dependent on their definitions. A methodological distinction between representational and non-representational aspects is expressed as a divergence between particular definitions of consciousness and an ontological X that acts as a universality of consciousness. This position is derived through examining François Laruelle's non-standard philosophy, Wilfrid Sellars's critique of the myth of the given, and Iain Hamilton Grant's revisionary study of Schelling's naturphilosophie.
