Mindfulness meditation and bimanual coordination control: study of acute effects and the mediating role of cognition

A 15-minute mindfulness meditation session, involving breathing and open monitoring, improved the ability of both meditation-naïve and experienced participants to maintain an anti-phase bimanual coordination pattern at maximal speed and to delay or suppress the spontaneous transition to an in-phase pattern. Both groups also showed improved attentional performance and motor inhibition scores after meditation, but not after an active control condition (listening to a documentary podcast). No effects were found on perceptual inhibition, and the increase in motor inhibition did not statistically mediate the improvements in bimanual coordination control. The findings suggest acute motor benefits from a single meditation session regardless of prior meditation experience.

A single session of mindfulness meditation may acutely enhance cognitive performance regardless of meditation experience

A brief session of mindfulness meditation (MM) improves attention and cognitive flexibility more than an active listening control, regardless of prior meditation experience. In a within-subject experiment, 22 experienced meditators and 20 novices completed a Stroop task at baseline, after a 10-minute MM breathing exercise, and after a 10-minute attentive listening task. Both interventions led to faster reaction times compared to baseline, but MM produced larger improvements on both congruent and incongruent trials, which tap attention, inhibition, and cognitive flexibility. The findings suggest that even a single, short MM session can enhance cognitive performance without requiring previous practice.
