The Neural Impact of Breathwork on Innovation and Creativity in Engineers A Pilot Study

Pari Patel, Ryan Ahmed, Peter Van Woerkum et al.

In a controlled experiment with 15 Audi AG engineers, alpha breathwork (coherent breathing) was associated with the highest alpha-band power and the strongest creativity quality, with higher novelty and feasibility scores. Gamma breathwork (rapid nasal cycles) generated the most ideas, producing 54 unique ideas and 170 total items. Both breathwork protocols outperformed a control condition on composite creativity, with alpha achieving an average creativity score of 3.13 versus 2.51 in control (+24.6%), and gamma achieving 3.03 versus 2.51 (+20.8%). The findings suggest structured breathwork can modulate neural oscillations and enhance innovation capacity, with alpha protocols optimizing divergent thinking and gamma enhancing focused attention. This was an exploratory pilot study in an industrial setting, not formal scientific research.
