Effects of mindfulness meditation training offered in-person and via a virtual world on self-compassion: A study with U.S. military active duty and veterans.

Work (Reading, Mass.) January 1, 2024 Valerie J Berg Rice, Paul J Schroeder, Stephen C Allison 5 citations

Mindfulness-based stress reduction programs delivered in-person and through a virtual world both improved self-compassion among active duty and veteran U.S. military service members. Self-compassion increased by 10% for the in-person group and 14% for the virtual world group, while a wait-list control group showed no improvement. Combined treatment groups showed a 10.3% improvement, with participants who had lower initial self-compassion benefiting more. Online mindfulness delivery can effectively promote self-compassion in a wider audience, potentially improving coping, confidence, and well-being while reducing anxiety and stress.

Impact of In-Person and Virtual World Mindfulness Training on Symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder.

Military Medicine March 1, 2018 Valerie J Rice, Baoxia Liu, Paul J Schroeder

Military personnel who completed mindfulness training, either in-person or in a virtual world, showed reductions in ADHD symptoms, while a wait-list control group did not. In-person training produced clinically relevant reductions in PTSD symptoms, though the results were not statistically significant. Virtual-world training did not produce the same PTSD benefit. When participants with high initial ADHD symptoms were examined together, those who received mindfulness training improved, whereas the control group did not. The findings suggest that in-person mindfulness training may be more beneficial for PTSD symptoms, while either delivery method can reduce attentional symptoms.
