The Effectiveness of Mindfulness Training on Young Adult Musicians Experiencing Music Performance Anxiety
uO Research (University of Ottawa) November 25, 2019 Nicole Stanson
A two-week mindfulness intervention reduced self-reported music performance anxiety in musicians, while a control group without mindfulness training experienced increased anxiety. The study used the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and heart rate monitoring before and after a mock jury performance. Although the mindfulness group showed a significant decrease in cognitive anxiety compared to controls, heart rate data revealed no significant differences between groups, indicating that mindfulness training did not affect the physiological experience of performance anxiety. Baseline anxiety levels differed between groups, complicating interpretation.
