ROLE OF PSYCHEDELIC DRUGS IN MENTAL HEALTH CARE: A NARRATIVE REVIEW
Medicina academica integrativa. December 20, 2024 Tamara Trajbarič
Good mental health supports resilience, personal growth, and community engagement, yet many people do not respond fully to existing treatments or experience side effects. Individuals increasingly use psychedelics for self-guided psychotherapy outside clinical settings, drawn by potential transformative benefits. Definitions and applications of psychedelics vary, requiring nuanced understanding and caution. Earlier prohibition was driven by exaggerated perceptions of harm, but modern evidence recognizes psychedelics as powerful substances capable of both profound positive and negative outcomes. Safety is paramount, and current research faces methodological limitations. Addressing these gaps is essential for advancing psychedelics' therapeutic potential and ensuring responsible integration into mental health care while mitigating risks.
