Development of the Italian Version of the Near-Death Experience Scale.

A reliable Italian version of the Near-Death Experience Scale has been developed and tested. The scale was translated through multiple stages and then administered to 20 patients who had been in a coma and later regained full consciousness. Inter-rater reliability was good, and test-retest reliability was excellent. This tool can now be used to study how often near-death experiences occur, why they vary across different life-threatening conditions, and what brain mechanisms might underlie them.
