Effects of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation on Body Perception: No Evidence for Specificity of the Right Temporo-Parietal Junction.

Inhibitory repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) at 1 Hz increased the frequency of abnormal body perceptions (ABP) compared to excitatory 15 Hz rTMS in 35 healthy adults, but the stimulation site—right temporo-parietal junction (rTPJ) versus a control site—did not affect ABP frequency. Responses to an own-body transformation task were slower with 1 Hz than 15 Hz rTMS, also regardless of site. ABP from rTMS at either site was accompanied by electroencephalographic power decreases across all frequencies at left anterior and central cortical sites. These results suggest that inhibitory rTMS can induce ABP, but the rTPJ may not have a specific role in this process.

People who frequently recall dreams show higher blood flow in two brain regions—the temporoparietal junction (TPJ) and the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC)—both during sleep and while awake, compared with people who rarely recall dreams. High recallers averaged 5.2 dream recalls per week, low recallers 0.5. The findings support the idea that these parts of the default mode network are involved in producing and encoding dreams, not just in recalling them after waking. Increased TPJ activity may also help orient attention to external stimuli and promote brief awakenings that aid memory encoding.
