Purpose and Meaning at the Subconscious Level: An Integrative Review Comparing the SGE Model with Contemporary Frameworks for Inner Transformation and Fundamental Peace

Preprints.org February 27, 2026 Luis A. Gallardo preprint

A new therapeutic model called Shadow→Gift→Essence (SGE) proposes that authentic purpose and meaning are not discovered through conscious effort but are remembered by transforming disowned aspects of the self (Shadow) into positive intentions (Gift) and embodied qualities (Essence). The model outlines a five-stage therapeutic process and six wound-virtue pairs, such as Repression→Honesty and Shame→Humour. Compared with five existing frameworks—Frankl's logotherapy, Self-Determination Theory, Jungian shadow work, transpersonal psychology, and positive psychology—the SGE model uniquely bridges existential, depth, and transpersonal traditions. It aims to cultivate Fundamental Peace, a sustainable state of inner coherence beyond symptom relief, and suggests a paradigm shift toward subconscious-level interventions in humanistic psychology.
