Neurología contemplativa

Kranion December 12, 2024 Araceli Alonso-Cánovas

Contemplation, derived from the Latin contemplatio (related to temple as a sacred building), is defined as intentionally creating a space for observing one's experience. Mindfulness is the central quality of contemplation. Contemplative neuroscience studies these practices scientifically, with meditation being the most studied and implemented. This work analyzes contemplative experience as a state of consciousness and from a neurophenomenological perspective, considering objective analysis. It reviews functional, structural, and electroencephalographic changes from meditation, its effects on cognition and behavior, and bodily effects at a vegetative level, termed embodied contemplation. The transcendent and spiritual aspect of contemplation and its implications for meaning in human life are also addressed. Contemplative practices are evaluated as a healthy habit and a tool for self-knowledge and understanding the brain.
