Quantum Brain Dynamics and Consciousness

Advances in Consciousness Research October 27, 1995 Mari Jibu, Kunio Yasue

A new quantum framework for understanding brain functions like consciousness and memory is presented, grounded in quantum field theory. The theory simultaneously justifies quantum physics for sub-microscopic brain constituents and classical physics for microscopic and macroscopic ones, offering an alternative to the dominant neuron-network paradigm. Certain physical substrates in the brain support quantum field phenomena, with memory stored in a state of macroscopic order and consciousness realized by the creation and annihilation dynamics of energy quanta of the electromagnetic field and molecular fields of water and protein.
