Medial prefrontal decoupling from the default mode network benefits memory

During retrieval of schema-based memories, the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) decouples from the default mode network (DMN), and the degree of this decoupling predicts memory performance. This suggests a demand-specific reconfiguration of the DMN supports schema memory. In a control condition relying on episodic memory, activity in the parahippocampal gyrus was positively related to memory performance. These results indicate dynamic reconfiguration of brain networks in response to task demands, with the mPFC decoupling for schema memory and the parahippocampal gyrus decoupling for episodic memory.
