Mantras for Mental Well-Being: A Methodical Review on Emotional stability, Anxiety and Quality of Life

INDIAN JOURNAL OF MULTIDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH June 12, 2025 Apu Chakma

Mantra-based meditation (MBM) reduces anxiety and depressive symptoms while improving emotional stability and quality of life across diverse populations including students, veterans, healthcare workers, and individuals with chronic conditions. The review synthesizes findings from randomized controlled trials, meta-analyses, and observational studies published in the last decade. Key practices examined are Gayatri Mantra Meditation, OM chanting, and mantra repetition programs. Evidence suggests MBM activates the parasympathetic nervous system, fosters mindfulness, and supports emotional regulation. Improvements in psychological capital, attentional control, and sleep quality are also reported. Some studies show mixed or inconclusive outcomes when comparing MBM to mindfulness-based interventions or cognitive-behavioral therapy. The review calls for standardized methodologies and long-term follow-up.
