A Contemporary Approach to Spiritual and Theological Reflection from the Perspective of Kahneman’s System Thinking

Religions April 9, 2026 Julie Robertson, Sehrish Haroon, Thomas St. James O’Connor et al.

Drawing on Daniel Kahneman's concept of System 1 thinking—which includes emotions, dreams, and intuition—this hermeneutical analysis examined 53 texts to explore how such thinking appears in contemporary spiritual and theological reflection. The findings indicate a rise in texts using System 1 thinking in this context, with disciplines outside theology increasingly practicing spiritual reflection as part of spiritual care and also employing System 1 thinking. There is growing awareness and use of diverse cultures and faith experiences, alongside an increase in the demographic of people who are spiritual but not religious, linked to dreams, emotions, and intuition. An overlap between spiritual and theological reflection is also developing.

Mindfulness Techniques and Practices in Islamic Psychotherapy: The Power of Mu-raqabah

Consensus July 25, 2025 Sehrish Haroon

Islamic psychotherapy can integrate mindfulness techniques rooted in the concept of muraqabah, an Islamic practice of mindful awareness of God. The book argues that muraqabah offers a culturally and spiritually resonant framework for therapeutic mindfulness, distinct from secular approaches. It examines how this practice can be applied in psychotherapy to address mental health issues while respecting Islamic beliefs and values. The work provides theoretical foundations and practical guidance for clinicians working with Muslim clients, emphasizing the compatibility of muraqabah with contemporary psychological interventions.
