Depression in cancer patients adds to the burden of treatment. Beyond biological factors, individual, interpersonal, and social factors—including lack of social support—affect mental health. Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) reduces depression during treatment and is developed as a prevention program for high-risk individuals to learn long-term wellness skills. This qualitative literature review examines counseling and MBCT as treatments for cancer patients. MBCT helps individuals shift from negative responses toward understanding alternative ways to respond to situations. By cultivating mindfulness, individuals can use techniques when negative emotions arise. Ideally, when sadness occurs and triggers negative associations that can lead to depression, MBCT helps replace negative thought patterns with positive ones. In practice, MBCT teaches individuals to disengage from maladaptive patterns of negative thinking that contribute to depressive symptoms.
