The Transcriptional Signature of Agape Love: A Gene Expression Analysis of Altruistic Behavior and Immune Function

HAL (Le Centre pour la Communication Scientifique Directe) January 25, 2026 Laszlo Pokorny Dr. Laszlo Pokorny

Practices such as mindfulness, yoga, and relaxation response, which cultivate love and compassion, are associated with a favorable shift in the activity of genes related to immune function and stress. Analyzing gene expression data from four public datasets (358 total participants) showed consistent increases in the activity of antiviral genes (e.g., IFI27, RSAD2, IFIT1, IFIT3, MX2) and decreased activity of the stress-related gene FKBP5. This pattern partially reverses the gene expression profile linked to chronic stress and social adversity. The findings provide preliminary evidence that love-oriented contemplative practices may influence the body's molecular response through mind-body pathways.
