Abstract
This quantitative study examined the transcriptional signature of agape love through a gene expression analysis of altruistic behavior and immune function, employing the Quantum Psychoneuroimmunotheology (QPNIT) theoretical framework. The study addressed a significant gap in the literature: despite millennia of theological reflection on love's transformative power and decades of psychoneuroimmunological research demonstrating mind-body connections, no systematic investigation had examined whether agape love—unconditional, selfless love as described in Christian scripture—might have measurable biological correlates at the gene expression level. Using secondary analysis of four publicly available Gene Expression Omnibus datasets (N = 358), the study examined transcriptional changes associated with mind-body interventions theoretically aligned with love and compassion cultivation, including mindfulness, yoga, and relaxation response practices. Differential expression analysis, Conserved Transcriptional Response to Adversity (CTRA) gene signature analysis, pathway enrichment analysis, and meta-analysis were conducted. Results revealed consistent upregulation of interferon-stimulated antiviral genes (IFI27, RSAD2, IFIT1, IFIT3, MX2) across all datasets, with 74.3% of antiviral genes showing positive meta-analytic effect sizes.
