Investigating the effect of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction on stress level and brain activity of college students

IBRO Neuroscience Reports May 1, 2022 Anh An, H. Hoang, Long Trang et al.

An 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) intervention reduced negative emotional states in college students from a low-middle income country, with a 33% reduction in Perceived Stress Scale scores and nearly 40% reduction in Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale subscale scores. The control group showed no statistically significant change. EEG data revealed increased alpha band power in frontal and occipital lobes, especially during stress-inducing cognitive tasks, suggesting MBSR may enhance tolerance of negative emotional states. The findings support MBSR as an effective and sustainable stress-countering approach for students in LMICs.
