Exploring the Growth and Impact of Contemporary Mindfulness Programs in Japanese Society

JAPANESE SOCIETY AND CULTURE March 18, 2025 Shreya Wagh

Mindfulness, originally rooted in Hindu and Buddhist traditions for spiritual enlightenment, was adapted in the late 20th century into secular, evidence-based therapeutic interventions in the West, leading to its global spread in healthcare, education, and corporate settings. This Westernized version has been reintroduced to its countries of origin, including Japan. The article examines the rise and growth of mindfulness programs in Japan by analyzing literature and organizations offering such programs. Mindfulness-based interventions gained popularity in Japan in the 21st century, spreading to the general population after 2016, and have become associated with health programs, yoga, psychotherapy, corporate training, and Zen meditation. Japan has developed its unique approach over time, and this growth may create an opportunity for Japan to reconnect with Buddhism.
