The Soteriological Significance of Buddhānussati: Path to Liberation or Preliminary Practice

INTERANTIONAL JOURNAL OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH IN ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT December 18, 2025 Kumara Kumara

Buddhānussati, the recollection of the Buddha in Theravāda Buddhism, serves multiple soteriological functions beyond being merely a preliminary devotion. It can facilitate access concentration (upacāra samādhi) and the growth of wisdom through contemplation of the Buddha's attributes, potentially paving the way toward liberation (Nibbāna). The practice is not limited to reinforcing faith and ethical behavior but can generate the concentration needed for meditative absorption and subsequent insight, depending on practitioner ability and context.

Enhancing Spiritual Resilience: The Role Of Buddhānussati Bhāvanā In Community Well-Being And Mental Health

International Journal of Research Publication and Reviews December 1, 2025 Kumara Kumara

Meditative recollection of the Buddha's virtues, known as Buddhanussati Bhavana, fosters emotional stability, ethical vision, and a sense of security within Buddhist communities. The practice constructs cognitive images of ideal behavioral templates that address fear, self-doubt, and psychological restlessness. It enhances community well-being through rituals like communal chanting and group meditation, building a culture of trust and emotional interdependence that cushions against social fragmentation and stress. The practice increases positive emotions, self-control, and resilient thinking, showing similarities with positive psychology, gratitude interventions, and cognitive therapy. Although rooted in spirituality, it also offers a valuable secular model for improving self-care and interconnectedness in society.
