Neural Pathways to Attention Enhancement: EEG Spectral Ratio Analysis of CM-II Meditation's Effect on Student Attention

Frontiers in Education Conference October 13, 2024 Sreekanth Gopi, N. Dehbozorgi

A three-stage guided meditation called ChakraMarmaKosha Meditation II (CM-II), which involves past emotional cleansing, reviewing the day, and visualizing future components accompanied by flute music based on a chosen Raga, was developed to improve attention in engineering students. In an in-person EEG experiment with 15 college students, spectral analysis showed enhanced attentional focus after meditation, indicated by a decrease in Theta to Beta Ratio and an increase in Theta to Gamma Ratio. These results were validated with attention scores from the TestMyBrain tool. The study suggests CM-II meditation may reduce stress and improve attention, but notes limitations including a small sample size and single lab setting.
