Enhanced Attentional Network by Short-Term Intensive Meditation

A 4-day intensive meditation retreat improved executive attention and increased neural activity in brain regions supporting attention networks. In a randomized trial, 23 meditators and 14 relaxation retreat participants performed the attention network test during fMRI before and after the intervention. The meditation group showed significantly better behavioral performance on executive control and increased activation in the anterior cingulate cortex and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Activity in the right ACC predicted individual behavioral conflict levels. Alerting and orienting networks also showed enhanced activity after meditation. The findings suggest short-term meditation can strengthen attention networks at the neural level and may benefit those at risk of cognitive deficits.

The Immediate and Sustained Positive Effects of Meditation on Resilience Are Mediated by Changes in the Resting Brain

A 4-day meditation intervention produced immediate increases in mindfulness and resilience that were sustained at a 3-month follow-up, while a relaxation retreat showed only short-term gains. Meditation specifically strengthened resting-state functional connectivity between the left rostral anterior cingulate cortex and the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex, precuneus, and angular gyrus. Changes in connectivity between the rACC and dmPFC mediated the relationship between improvements in mindfulness and resilience and correlated with resilience changes both immediately and at 3 months. These neural changes may help protect against psychiatric disorders by improving stress-related brain mechanisms.
