Pattern Recognition Theory of Mind

arXiv Preprint Archive July 26, 2009 Gilberto de Paiva

The author proposes that pattern recognition, memorization, and processing form a foundational set of principles for theoretically modeling how the mind works. Most questions about mental functioning can be addressed through descriptive modeling and definitions derived from these principles. A definition of consciousness can be developed by assuming that a pattern recognition system can recognize its own patterns of activity. These principles, descriptive modeling, and definitions could serve as a basis for theoretical and applied research in cognitive sciences, especially in artificial intelligence.
