The Neural Impact of Mindfulness-Based and Somatic Practices on Music Performance Anxiety

Open MIND May 21, 2026 Angela Boland

A thesis investigated how mindfulness-based and somatic interventions affect musicians' brain activity and well-being. In two studies, 27 musicians aged 18–28 completed a two-week mindfulness-based vocal improvisation program (EVE), a traditional mindfulness program, or no intervention. After both interventions, particularly EVE, brain activity indicated improved emotional and attentional regulation, alongside reduced state anxiety. A third study with 23 professional musicians examined a somatic intervention called Body Mapping for Musicians, delivered over two sessions and three weeks of self-guided practice. After Body Mapping, brain activity showed reduced emotional arousal during an anxiety-provoking task and enhanced sensorimotor integration, with decreased performance anxiety and musculoskeletal discomfort.
