Feasibility and Acceptability of an Abbreviated, Four-Week Mindfulness Program for Chronic Pain Management.

Pain medicine (Malden, Mass.) September 8, 2020 Carrie E. Brintz, Isabel Roth, K. Faurot et al.

A four-week abbreviated mindfulness program for adults with chronic pain is feasible, acceptable, and may improve quality of life and psychological functioning. In a single-arm study of 23 adults new to mindfulness, participants completed four weekly 90-minute sessions adapted from Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. Acceptable retention and attendance rates and high satisfaction ratings were reported. Significant pre- to post-treatment improvements occurred in pain intensity, pain interference, depressive symptoms, positive affect and well-being, sleep disturbance, pain acceptance, pain catastrophizing, perceived stress, and dispositional mindfulness, but not in physical functioning or anxiety. An appropriately powered randomized controlled trial is needed.

From a state to a trait: Trajectories of state mindfulness in meditation during intervention predict changes in trait mindfulness

Personality and Individual Differences July 1, 2015 Laura G. Kiken, E. Garland, K. Bluth et al.

Individual trajectories of state mindfulness during an eight-week mindfulness-based intervention varied significantly and predicted changes in trait mindfulness and psychological distress. Those whose state mindfulness increased more over repeated meditation sessions also showed greater gains in trait mindfulness and greater reductions in distress. The findings suggest that cultivating state mindfulness through meditation practice may contribute to a more mindful and less distressed disposition, though individual patterns of change differ and require further study.
